Mornings can be a challenge. Even someone like myself, who is a true “morning person”, struggles from time to time. Who wants to leave their cozy bed, especially in those cold winter months? I have learned that these early morning hours are some of the most valuable and sacred moments of my day. So how do I make it a priority to get out of bed every morning by 5:30 am? I’m sharing 5 simple steps that will make you a morning person in no time!

5 Tips to Creating a Morning Routine That Actually Sticks | Living Well With Nic
  1. Start slow. Set your alarm a few minutes earlier every week to ease into a new wake up time. If you are currently waking up at 7 a.m. and want to have a few extra minutes to meditate, read or have your coffee in peace, start with setting your alarm at 6:45 for the next few days and see how it feels. If this time worked, consider sticking with it or setting the alarm a little bit earlier. This process is how you start a habit.
  2. Rise at the same time every day. This is key to getting your body into a natural rhythm. I understand there will be days when this just doesn’t happen, for instance, if you’re traveling or come down with the flu, but try to be as consistent as possible. Even on the weekends! Our bodies thrive off routine, especially when it comes to sleeping.
  3. Wake up before your family. Planning to wake up before the rest of your family can give you time to check in with yourself and listen to what your body needs. Maybe that’s going for a walk, making a cup of coffee, or reading a book and enjoying the peace and quiet. Whatever you do, take time to just be present by yourself.
  4. Prep the night before. Every decision you make takes time, so if you cut down on the time spent deciding on what to make for breakfast or pack for lunch, this is key to making your routine stick. A great way to develop a seamless morning routine is to prep the night before. A few ways to prep ahead are making lunch and putting it in containers, picking out your outfit or making smoothies that are ready to go and take on-the-go.
  5. Keep it simple. Creating a morning routine is not meant to be stressful. It’s about developing habits and simplifying your life to make your mornings as valuable as possible. Remember, your morning sets the tone for the rest of your day! Don’t over-complicate it. Give it a month and try out a few different things. Find what works best for you and stick with it.
